Driving
Driving is on the left-hand side of the road in New Zealand. Drivers and passengers must wear seat belts at all times in both front and rear seats.
There are two toll roads in the North Island. The Northern Gateway Toll Road is an extension of the Northern Motorway between Albany and Puhoi to the north of Auckland. The second, Route K, links Tauranga and Mount Maunganui.
Any visitor to New Zealand may drive for up to 12 months if they have either a current driver's licence from their home country or an International Driving Permit. All drivers must carry their licence or permit at all times when driving.
The minimum age for sitting for a restricted driver’s licence is 15 years.
Rental vehicles are readily available eg, Hertz, Budget, Avis and Thrifty. There are age restrictions for driving rental vehicles. (See Hire Vehicle listings.)
New Zealand Transport Agency's website has details on the New Zealand Road Code and other motoring information. The Road Code is also available from rental car companies and most book shops.
